Business for Clean Water

Juan de Fuca Cottages was the first business to be designated a "Business for Clean Water" we support "green thinking" because the environment is ours. It is the air we breath, the water we drink, and the places we live, work and play.

This plan of action was created to lead us to a position of environmental stewardship.

Fresh air is our "best friend".  The cottages have several windows that provide good cross-ventilation.  All windows and doors are open for maximum periods of time between guests.  Unscented non-toxic, all natural cleaning products are used throughout  our cleaning routine.

16 points were identified to promote property level improvements in the areas of waste management, energy conservation, water conservation and purchasing practices.

We have put into practice a recycling program for our guests to participate in for glass, aluminum cans, tin, cardboard, newspaper, plastic bottles and magazines.  In the summertime this adds up to 9 large trash cans per week that are not being added to dumpsites!

We have committed to phase out disposable items and to identify and properly dispose of all hazardous materials.

In an effort to conserve energy and reduce green house gas emissions, we continue to retrofit all inappropriate lighting from incandescent to compact florescent bulbs. In our guestrooms, water efficient shower heads and tap aerators are helping to conserve engery and standard temperatures have been set for all domestic hot water tanks.

We have optional towels and sheet exchange programs, our valued guests are also doing their part for our environment by conserving enormous amounts of water, energy and detergents.

We donate items that we no longer use, many may prove vital for families in need, including beds, furniture, amenities, linens, and other used items. In addition to the donation of reusable goods, we try to identify those materials that may prove to be of use to charitable organizations.

It’s good for business, it’s good for morale, and it’s good for the planet.
